At our group meeting on 17th July we were very humbled to be presented with a donation of £1700 by Mrs Carole Hatherell (third right). Very sadly Carole's husband Richard passed away earlier this year and Diabetes UK was the charity chosen for the funeral donations.
The cheques were presented by Carole to Gemma Jackson (DUK Volunteer Support Officer - second right). Carole has asked for the money to be given to the DUK adoption project called 'turning Stem cells into Beta cells'. In diabetes, insulin-producing beta cells are destroyed or stop working properly. New beta cells can be made in a lab, and Dr Hill (London based) wants to find ways to improve this process. This could help scientists to improve the effectiveness of islet cell transplants to treat Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. We are extremely grateful for the generous donation and I am sure you will agree that this is such a worthwhile project and gives us all hope for a cure in the future.
Also in the picture above (far left) is Mr Ray Puntis. Ray is Carole's brother in law and has had Type 1 Diabetes for 50 years. He was presented with the 'Alan Nabarro' award earlier this year and brought the medal along to the group meeting for us all to see. Such an inspiration for us all. Thank you so much to both Carole and Ray.
Far right in the picture is Jo Hancock, Chair of Chippenham Group.
